“Ravenshaw” sounds comically Gothic. A “Ravens-shaw” would be “a wood full of ravens”—a dark place inhabited by birds of prey. Lord Ravenshaw, patron of family theatricals, had at least the good taste to cancel the performance when the dowager died, a decent observance of which Yates complains (I, ch. 13). NO, this is not a new list, but for writers venturing into Austen's time, who wish to be authentic, this is a necessity, and bears repeating so.
